• Jackson XC (in Jackson, NH) tons of trails for xc ski excellent resort but still tons of natural stuff. (You can stay at the AMC Joe Dodge Lodge)- arrin
• Also doublehead cabin near Jackson NH - 2mi ski in and out to rustic forest service cabin $20 per night
• Lincoln woods (close to Lincoln NH) nice loop for skiing and hiking relatively flat.- arrin
• Zealand Hut (near highland center) is 6 mis in and there is great skiing beyond it too
• Greeley ponds trail XC ski.- arrin

• As far as XC skiing, you can try staying at the highland center (Shapleigh bunkhouse if looking to be more economical options).

In VT:

• northeast kingdom trails / Burke.
• I head good things about craftsbury up in Vermont

In Canada

• If you have time to go a little farther away, you can check out the quebec provincial parks info, they have some cabins they rent
